China is home to the world's oldest continuous culture, and its citizens make up about one-fifth of the global population. However, for many years it was an inaccessible history to the rest of the world. The West could only get tantalizing glimpses of China: a glorious past, imperial decadence, a secretive Communist regime, beautiful arts, and an inspirational culture.
