Hugh Corbett, clerk of the King's Bench, is sent to investigate the apparent suicide of a goldsmith, who had taken sanctuary at St. Mary Le Bow, after killing a moneylender. Concern centers on a Satanist group meeting at a local tavern owned by the beautiful Alice atte Bowe, with whom Corbett falls in love.
