"In this book Juhana Aunesluoma analyses the British role during the early cold war period in Scandinavia. He argues that British policy was instrumental in establishing the conditions whereby Sweden could reconcile the conflicting demands of its official foreign policy of neutrality with the reality of its economic, cultural and ideological Western orientation. Swedish military nonalignment did not lead to international isolation as Sweden was secretly integrated into NATO strategic planning during the Korean War. The search for an understanding with Sweden started in Britain."

"This book contributes to the body of knowledge about the cold war in Sweden. It also examines the problems of Britain as a postwar world power and its general role in the first phase of the cold war in building Western cooperation, and the nature of Britain's power in this era of change."--Jacket.
