Two British journalists describe the explosion of Mount Pelée on the island of Martinique May 8, 1902, which resulted in the death of nearly 30,000 people. The authors made use of contemporary records and survivors recollections to show how the natural signs of coming disasters were ignored because of the need to keep the populace on hand for a coming election.
