Two young couples seek freedom and love amidst slavery-rich Charleston, South Carolina. When nineteen-year-old Benjamin arrives from South Africa, he is scheduled to be sold into slavery--but is set free by a Christian who takes him in as a paid worker. The man's son, Dan Johnson, befriends Benjamin, and the two make plans to start a cattle ranch in Texas.
