Abstract: Three areas, where the inclusion of intelligence within a data network can impact user's utility for such networks, are examined: User Interface, Addressing schemes and Transaction Record Keeping. There's a danger that computer-based communication networks could evolve in the wrong way. Before it's too late, we should decide just what we want them to do, and equip them with the kinds of machine intelligence that will enable them to serve users' real needs.
