THE SHATTERED DREAM: It was all wrong, the sour old woman, the vicious little girl, the decaying house. Jean Evans saw her dreams crumbling as she stood before them, shocked by the nastiness that they displayed. ''I gave Amos Fitch a ride to town, Aunt Carrie,'' she said. The woman was immediately up on the edge of her chair. ''Did he say anything?'' she demanded. Jean paused deliberately. ''Well, out with it, girl! What did he say?'' ''Nothing specific---but he hinted that something was wrong. That you are in some sort of trouble.'' Aunt Carrie sighted and settled back into her seat. ''Hinting isn't sufficient---he needs evidence. Which he hasn't got.'' Jean stared at her in disbelief. What sort of terrible welcome was this? Was the old man right in his accusations?
