A convinced communist, Witte finds that his colleagues now want to talk about all the problems with words such as party and class enemy and have decided that the state has long since betrayed its ideals. The novel tells the events surrounding the uprising in East Germany on the 17th of June, 1953, accompanied by authentic documents, told from the perspective of those who supported and shared the responsibility for the events.
