A note at the beginning of the book: 'This book is literally a scrapbook. A patchwork of notes and queries, facts and fancies; partly a diary with sometimes many weeks between the entries, partly just a personal refuge from the anxieties and frustration of years of war. For this reason there is but little mention of war in it, except as the inescapable background to everyday life.'
