Satan, according to the biblical exegesis of the literary and religious scholar Rene Girard, exemplifies the immemorial means by which, in the long ages before prophecy and the gospel, all communities, polities, kingdoms, and empires organized themselves at their foundation and by which, again in a regular and ritualistic manner, they sustained that aboriginal establishment.
