The 1988 Surgeon General's report (or SGR, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services [USDHHS], 1988) proclaiming smoking to be an addiction "similar to heroin and cocaine" (p.9) was followed by an explosion of research on the individual differences, the psychopathology, and emotional processes associated with smoking.
