To Europeans residing in the Ottoman empire, who come in daily contact with the Turkish authorities, and who have thereby the opportunities of watching and analysing the general course of their internal policy, the frightful scenes which have lately occurred in Syria are but the natural results of that persistent jealousy of the native Christian races which has long been, and ever will be, a predominant feature in the character of the Turk.
