Whatever else she may have been, Mary Magdalene was an outsider - someone who failed to fit in totally with the people and culture in which she found herself - and it is above all this air of social unacceptability that has made her an icon to generation upon generation of those who, for whatever reason, find themselves outside the prevailing moral climate.
