According to Gallo and his colleagues, 'HIV has been shown to have a direct cytopathic effect' (cell killing effect) on CD4+ cells, firstly by Montagnier and his colleagues in 1983, and then by him (Gallo) and his colleagues in a series of four papers published in Science in 1984 (Shaw, Wong-Staal & Gallo, 1988).
