In recent years the historiographical discussion of Nazi Jewish policy has reflected the wider debate on National Socialism between so-called "intentionalists" and "functionalists" and the even broader division within the historical profession between those who explain history through the ideas and decisions of individuals and those who explain history through the impersonal and underlying structures of society and institutions that limit and shape the actions of individuals.
