Vice-chancellor, Ladies and Gentlemen, Inauguration takes its name from the ancient Roman custom of judging the omens for a particular enterprise by studying the flight of birds; and it is customary for an inaugural lecture to provide a similar occasion when the omens for one's subject can be considered, drawing on any auguries that offer themselves.
