Anyone wishing to understand the interaction of science and religion needs to become familiar with three major landmarks-the astronomical debates of the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries; the rise of the Newtonian worldview in the late seventeenth and eighteenth century; and the Darwinian controversy of the nineteenth.
