SHORTLY after four o'clock on the afternoon of October 10, 1923, New York Giants outfielder Casey Stengel smashed a long drive to the deep left center of the New York Yankees' massive new stadium, lost a shoe as he rounded second, and slid in to home just ahead of the throw.
