Reading the Bible today
God is always free to act, whatever men may do or fail to do. It is this freedom of God which sets us free. It sets us free from ourselves; it enables us to escape from the limitations of our own religious achievements. Because of it, we are not left at the mercy of our own faith. On the contrary, we are upheld and sustained by God's faithfulness, by that which God has already spoken, that which God already has done, that which God already has promised. The religious life to which the Scriptures invite us is a constant growing into the reality of what already is, because of what God already has wrought. [p.21]
