Oxford University history graduate **Dorothy Kathleen Broster** used her academic knowledge to good effect in the creation of a series of historical novels which gained a considerable reputation for their accurate evocation of past times. Particularly highly regarded were a series of tales set in Scotland at the time of the Jacobite Rebellion. The convincing authenticity of her writing is the result of painstaking research, a skill developed during the author's time at university and which served her well throughout her literary career. Broster's supernatural tales are interesting and well-executed works of some originality.
